  • Haiti earthquake assessment continues
The UM Committee on Relief (UMCOR) team’s goals are to support the Methodist Church of Haiti (EMH) to assess damages and needs and to plan for long-term recovery in the devastated Caribbean nation. EMH has helped to identify a location where an UMCOR office and staff residence can be established in the southern Port-au-Prince area. The UMCOR team has piloted a program of food distribution to largely unattended local communities outside of Port-au-Prince. The UMCOR team also met with representatives of some of the other not-for-profit, nongovernmental and church organizations, whose initial efforts to respond are being coordinated by the United Nations. The full assessment of damages and needs, as well as an initial clearing of debris from the earthquake, is expected to take at least another two months.
In the meantime, the best way for congregations and individuals to respond to the Haiti crisis is by supporting the work of UMCOR (Advance #418325). Make your donations through your offering plate - made out to SAPUMC - marked for Haiti. Not only are funds needed but also health kits.

  • Tax Relief Provision
People who give to UMCOR and other charities providing earthquake relief in Haiti can claim these donations on the tax return they are completing this season, according to the Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayers who itemize deductions on their 2009 return qualify for this special tax relief provision, enacted Jan. 22. Only cash contributions made after Jan. 11, 2010, and before March 1, 2010, are eligible. This includes contributions made by text message, check, credit card or debit card. The new law only applies to cash (as opposed to property) contributions. The contributions must be made specifically for the relief of victims in areas affected by the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti. Taxpayers have the option of deducting these contributions on either their 2009 or 2010 returns, but not both.

  • Flower Chart for 2010
The Flower Chart for 2010 is up at the back of the sanctuary for one more week. Choose a date on the flower chart and write your name in. If the flowers are in memory of someone or in honor of someone or an anniversary/birthday etc., please print (clearly) the dedication on the back of the special envelope for flowers. Place your check in the special envelope for flowers and place it in the offering plate or in the church office. This year e-mail reminders about flower orders will be sent the week prior to the Sunday for which you have signed up. If you have any questions, please contact the Church Office or a member of the Worship Committee. Make out your check for $43 to SAPUMC and on the memo line, please write “flowers.” Please get January and February entered as soon as possible. The last day the Flower Chart will be at the back of the church will be March 7th. After March 7th, call the office to place flower orders. Sign up early and often!
